Choose the category that best describes the fire you intend to kindle.

Category I Fire Permit

A small controlled camp or cooking fire contained within a ring of fire-resistant material or a portable fireplace.

The fire ring may be no greater than 32 inches in diameter.

The fire must be at least 25 feet from a structure.

Category I fires may be kindled with a valid permit at any time of day, conditions permitting.

Category II Fire Permit

A controlled camp or cooking fire contained within a ring of fire-resistant material or a portable fireplace.

The fire may be no greater than 4 feet in diameter.

The fire must be at least 50 feet from a structure.

Category II fires may generally only be kindled between 5:00 PM and 9:00 AM, unless it is actually raining.

Category III Fire Permit

A fire greater than 4 feet in diameter or a fire that is not contained within a ring of fire-resistant material.

This category commonly includes brush piles and similar open burns.

The fire must be at least 50 feet from a structure.

Category III fires may generally only be kindled between 5:00 PM and 9:00 AM, unless it is actually raining.

Category III burns require the permit holder to report when the burn is started and when the fire is completely out.

Please read and acknowledge each statement before continuing.

I understand that only permitted materials may be burned, including clean, untreated wood no greater than 5 inches in diameter, untreated pallets, campfire wood, brush, and leaves.

I understand that a Category I fire must be at least 25 feet from structures, and Category II and Category III fires must be at least 50 feet from structures.

I understand that a Category I fire may be kindled with a valid permit at any time, conditions permitting. Category II and Category III fires may generally only be kindled between 5:00 PM and 9:00 AM unless it is actually raining with sufficient intensity and duration to prevent the fire from spreading in woodland fuels.

I own the property where the fire will be located, have written landowner approval, or am legally authorized to act on behalf of the landowner.

I understand that New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services regulations regarding outdoor burning must be followed, and that prohibited materials may not be burned.

I will have sufficient water, tools, and personnel available to control and completely extinguish the fire. I understand that a buried fire is not an extinguished fire.

I understand that the fire must be attended at all times. I will remain on the same property as the fire, keep the fire in plain view, and be capable of extinguishing it.
